Redefining Surpassing Gomez

Surpassing Gomez is expanding it's group beyond a "challenge" group. Although challenges will still be assigned for each meeting for those who would like to do them, it is not required to complete a project for that challenge to participate in the group and meetings.

If you have work of your own and would like to come for the discussion aspect of the group, you are welcome to join us. Bring your complete or in progress piece for critique, feedback, and for the community of other creative people.

Again, the group is open to all creative people: artists, writers, sculptors, photographers, etc..... The more variety, the more dimension to the group!

Come for the discussion. Come for the inspiration!

Challenge #1 - Warmth/Fire

Meeting: Sunday, February 8th

Place & Time: Missoula Public Library, 3pm - The Board Room
(note: if this doesn't work for everyone for this weekend, please let me know asap so we can try to locate another venue with a time frame that is more flexible. The library closes at 5pm, so we have to work around that. Venue & time may change from meeting to meeting until we find our groove.)

The theme for February is "Warmth" and our first challenge is "Fire."

Hope to you see you Sunday!!

Theme & Challenges

Each month we will pick a subject "theme" and then break it down into separate subject "challenges." The idea behind this is to push each subject a littler further by looking at it in more than one way; to compare and contrast, to see how things can differ and how they can overlap.

For example, if Fire was the "theme" it could then be broken down to Life & Destruction "challenges."

Please feel free to suggest themes and/or challenges via email, comments here, or in the meetings. This will be a very participant driven group.

A few guidelines:
- In order to maintain a common starting point and equal parameters, artwork presented for the challenges should be produced specifically for the challenge within the 2 week time frame. If you have already approached the subject, and have a piece finished, feel free to bring it to share but also participate in the current challenge and bring your new piece. Remember - this is a "challenge" group - challenge yourself to look at it from a different angle, different perspective, or try a new medium. Shake it up a bit!!

- Feel free to work together and collaborate on challenges. Meeting times however will be used for presenting finished pieces and for discussion. In the future, we may schedule a "challenge" as a collaborative workshop where we get together and create something as a group within a specified time frame if there is interest in that kind of activity.

Collaborations & Material Share

If anyone would like to collaborate on a project, is looking for certain materials, or has extra materials they are willing to share, trade, donate, etc. feel free to post comments here to connect with others from the group.

Welcome to Surpassing Gomez!

Surpassing Gomez is an art subject challenge group in Missoula, Montana. We will be meeting every two weeks, times and places will be posted here as well as current challenge subjects.

Feel free to jump in and join us at any time! The more diverse the group, the more fun and interesting it will be! This group is for sparking creativity, inspiration, and thought around things we may not otherwise approach. And then getting together as a group to present and discuss our pieces, and also to see how many different ways the same subject was approached. Artists, photographers, writers, crafters, and so forth - all are welcome!!

What is with the name Surpassing Gomez you might be wondering? The original post to test for interest in the group was posted on the craigslist artist page and the "captcha" phrase for that post was "surpassing gomez." With the nature of this group I liked the idea and symbolism.

The purpose of pursuing and participating in a group like this to stimulate our minds and creativity, to grow in whatever medium we are working in, or exploring beyond our comfort zones. Essentially the idea is to "surpass" the current state of creativity we are in, constantly learning, growing, and improving.
